Mediation is a traditional “problem-solving” process conducted by trained mediators. This facilitative process focuses on clarifying positions and identifying the interests and unmet needs of the parties, often with the goal to preserve the relationship as well as resolve the case.
The Magistrate Court mediation program is a community service project in which trained volunteer mediators work within the court system to help people resolve their small claims cases (cases where damages do not exceed $10,000) through mediation. The Court screens cases for those that are most appropriate for the mediation process and refers them to mediation. Or, a party in the case may request mediation services from the Court. This program is available in all Magistrate Courts in the Thirteenth Judicial District. There is no cost to the parties to participate in the mediation program.
